The venture has been partially financed through grants, loans and mortgages to be repaid from rental income and low income housing tax credits. According to a recent report commissioned by the Mayor's Office of HIV Resources Coordination, independent and affordable housing is the number one need for people with HIV/AIDS. Also needed is housing that is convenient to transportation, medical care, shopping and other community resources. With its location on Capitol Hill, the Chesney-Kleinjohn Apartments will make a significant contribution towards fulfilling those needs. Construction will begin on the project November 1, with completion planned in six or seven months. Chesney-Kleinjohn was incorporated in April 1994. Rev. Frank Beard, president of the board of directors of the non-profit and a pastor at Metropolitian Commuinity Church, 960 Clarkson, said, "Like many other meaningful projects, this began with a dream. This was a dream of two individuals who believed very strongly that person with HIV/AIDS should be able to live in affordable and accessible housing." Those individuals were Keith Chesney and Ray Kleinjohn, who left their entire estates to be used as seed money for this type of project. For More Information Contact: |
